Growing Trends in U.S. Oats Consumption and Market Expansion

Oats consumption in the United States has been growing steadily in recent years, driven in large part by increasing health awareness and the convenience of modern oat-based products. What began as a humble breakfast staple—appearing as hot porridge—has evolved into a diverse landscape of oatmeal, granola clusters, snack bars, and even oat-based beverages. This shift reflects consumers’ stronger preference for nutritious, plant-based foods that are both versatile and easy to incorporate into busy lifestyles.

Although the U.S. is not among the world’s top oat producers, it still plays a meaningful role in global agriculture. According to the latest USDA data, U.S. farmers harvested roughly 67.8 million bushels of oats in 2024, achieving record‐high yields per acre.  Converted into metric terms, this contributes a modest but significant share of world production, though still well behind major producers like Canada or the European Union. 

On the market side, the U.S. oats sector has seen substantial commercial growth. In 2024, the market size was estimated at US$ 1.3 billion, with projections by IMARC Group suggesting this figure could rise to US$ 1.8 billion by 2033, at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of about 3.38%. These numbers highlight how consumer demand is shifting not just toward traditional oatmeal, but also toward ready-to-eat cereals, snack foods, baked goods, and dairy-alternative products made from oats.

A key driver behind this expansion is the nutritional appeal of oats. Rich in soluble fiber—especially beta-glucan—they are known to support heart health by helping to lower cholesterol, and they promote satiety, which may aid in weight management. Health-conscious Americans increasingly view oats as a flexible ingredient that fits into many eating occasions: a warm bowl of oatmeal for breakfast, crunchy granola for snacking, or a creamy oat milk latte.

Distribution channels for oat-based products have also broadened. Supermarkets and big-box retailers continue to stock a wide range of oats, while convenience stores, health-food shops, and e-commerce platforms now offer specialized oat-based snacks and plant-based beverages. This accessibility helps fuel widespread adoption.

Still, the oat industry faces challenges. While demand climbs, supply must keep pace, and cultivation can be sensitive to weather and global trade dynamics. Even so, the momentum behind oats in the U.S. seems strong. As more consumers embrace plant-forward diets and prioritize whole, fiber-rich foods, oats are likely to remain a staple—and evolve—in American kitchens for years to come.

Uses of oats

Oats are a crop of Mediterranean origin, not as old as wheat and barley but their domestication dates back to ancient times. Oats rank around sixth in the world cereal production statistics following wheat, maize, rice, barley and sorghum.

Oat grains are sown in the winter and ripened in the fields by the summer sun. The oats are then harvested when fully ripe in the autumn. In the corn belt area, oats are chiefly used as a additional fodder.

Food uses for oats include as oat bran, oat meal, oat flour and oat flakes, which are mainly consumed as breakfast cereals. In United Kingdom, oats also used to make bread and sometimes for malting as well. Their main purpose was to make oatmeal concoctions, such as pottage, hasty pudding, gruel, washbrew, and gertbrew, which provided starch in the diet in more varied forms than oat bread and oat cake.

Other food products processed from oats are infant foods, muesli, granola bars, breads and biscuits, or cookies. In brewing, oats are mainly used as an ingredient to improve the pleasant flavour properties of the final products.

The food industry in North America uses approximately 1.7 million tons of oats while a major share goes to livestock feed industries. Oats still remain an important grain crop for people in marginal ecologies throughout the developing world, and in developed economies for specialized uses. History of Rye

Rye is the fifth cereal in importance in the world and in the United States. It is exceeded in the world by corn, wheat, oats and rice.

The origin of rye domestication is unknown but it was being cultivated at several locations in the general area of Turkey, north-western Iran and Armenia by 6000 BC. Rye arrived in Europe as cultivated crops by 4000 BC.

Unlike other grain, this nutritious food has always been a second class cultivar, somewhat considered a food of the poor. It first appeared as a significant food crop in northern Europe. From there, cultivation of the grain spread southward throughout the continent and, after about the 16th century, across the southern part of Russia into Siberia.

Al living standards in the times of the ancient Greeks and Romans and some other European cultures rose, the consumption of rye diminished, though people living in Germany, Scandinavia and eastern European nations still appreciate rye’s taste and nutrition.

During the Middle Ages, the poorer people of England ate bread made from rye, or from a mixture of rye and wheat, known as maslin.

It was unknown in the western hemisphere until it was brought to North America and to western South America by European settlers in the 16th and 17th centuries, and thence to the rest of South America, Australia, and South Africa.

Today, the majority of the world’s rye comes from the Russian Federation, Poland, China, Canada, and Denmark grow rye commercially as well.

Barley for human consumption

Together with wheat, rye and several important forages, like Russian wildrye and crested wheatgrass, barley belongs to the tribe Triticeae.

Barley is “winter hardy” and is able to survive in the frost of cold climates. It is used as a cooked cereal, or a hull of the kernel is removed by abrasion to create pearled barley (commonly used in soup).

Additionally, barley may be incorporated into breads pilafs of stuffing, or it may be used for malt production.

Production of malting barley ranks second after animal feed. It requires high quality grains that are not easy to produce everywhere but maintains or even increases its central position to supply the malting industry’s requirements.

In order to create malt, the barley grain is soaked in water to sprout the germ, and produce an enzyme that hydrolysis (break down) starch to a shorter carbon chain, maltose.

Maltose is then used to feed yeast and produce CO, and ethyl alcohol, since it is fermentable carbohydrate.

The alcohol and CO2 are important for brewing alcoholic beverages and for baking.

Dried malt is used in a variety of products including brewed, baked products, breakfast cereal, candies or malted milks.

Barley is one of the most healthful cereal grains human eat. Beta glycan type of fiber found in the barley kernel delivers a host of positive benefits to the human body.

Consumer following a gluten-free diet must avoid malt and should read ingredients labels to determine whether malt is an ingredient of a particular food product.

Medical researchers from all over the world have determined that a diet rich in barley greatly reduces plasma cholesterol and other blood lipids, and because of the unique qualities of its starch barley consumption also helps individuals maintain lowered blood sugar levels.

Barley is often used in animal feed – for pigs and cattle (not poultry beverage barely is a grain lower in starch than other grains such as wheat or corn). Its importance as an animal feed has increased over the years and barley is now one of the most important feed crops in temperate areas.
