Studies have shown that large doses of flaxseed oil can reduce blood clotting by reducing platelet aggregation.

Another study suggest that supplementing the diet with flaxseed oil for a period of four weeks will increase alpha-linolenic acid of blood phospholipids and triglycerides.

Alpha linolenic acid will improve body’s ability to fight heart disease. It will protect against stroke and myocardial infarction, arrhythmia and other cardiovascular heart disease.

Long before people knew about the health benefits of flaxseed oil, they used whole and milled flax seeds as a laxative.

Often most discussed in scientific and health circles is the ability of flaxseed oil to help reduce the chances of getting certain types of cancer.

Flaxseeds are naturals rich food source of antioxidants that fight free radical damage and act as phytoestrogens. Lignans and a few other naturally occurring phytoestrogens provide protection against hormone sensitive cancers such as breast cancer, ovarian cancer, uterine cancer, prostate cancer and even colon cancer.

Flaxseed has also been recently studied for any possible benefits of in the prevention of kidney damage in individuals suffering from systemic lupus erythematou (SLE).

Although some evidence already presented supports its use for SLE, more studies are necessary before flaxseed can be recommended for SLE.

Absent any strong findings of flaxseed oil benefiting cancer prevention, the healthy benefits of flaxseed oil should not be dismissed and should be incorporated into a regular healthy diet.

Some of the health benefits associated with flaxseed consumption may be due to the presence of compounds called lignans, which are known to possess various proestrogenic and antiestrogenic properties.
